Colstrip United Takes On DC
October 11, 2018
(Washington DC) – Colstrip United, a grassroots organization based out of Colstrip, MT assembled a team that traveled to Washington DC from October 2nd-6th to sit down with people at the Department of Energy and Department of Interior to talk to them about the future of Colstrip and the place that new coal technologies will need to have in both Montana's future as well as our nation's energy future.
The group members were:
Jim Atchison – Director of Southeastern Montana Economic Development Corp.
Senator Duane Ankney - District 20
Doug Martins - Rosebud County Commissioner
Molly Schwend - Colstrip native, Manager of Public Affairs for Cloud Peak Energy
Jack Standa - Manager of the Rosebud Mine at Colstrip
Joe Evers - Westmoreland Legal Council
Gordon Criswell - Talen Energy / Colstrip Power Plant
Lori Shaw - Founder of Colstrip United / President of Montana Minded
It was a diverse group that represented many angles of Colstrip's coal mining and energy generation interests as well as efforts in economic development and grassroots advocacy. This team unified behind the goal of continuing Colstrip's legacy of providing affordable, reliable, coal fired energy as well as incredible economic contributions to the entire state of Montana.
Colstrip United is a 3-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the importance of coal mining and coal energy. Driven completely by volunteer efforts, not a single person involved with it is paid for their work with it. “I want to extend a sincere thank you to the Colstrip United supporters and sponsors that made this trip possible” said Lori Shaw, Director of the organization. “Without you, we could have never taken our message this far, and it is a message that needs to be heard. Montana has more coal within its borders than any other state in the country. This means we are uniquely positioned to be a potential leader in new coal technologies in the future. There is simply no way that we will be able to meet global energy needs in the next 50 years without utilizing coal as part of an all-of-the-above approach. That is why we must initiate and advance these discussions now regarding who will be leading the charge on new coal technologies in our country. Montana has the will, now we are looking for the ways.”
